27.2.2025 Behind the scenes

A success story from the very beginning - that's Dr. Oetker Welt in Bielefeld. To mark its 20th anniversary, we take a look behind the scenes of the former “pudding powder factory” and present all kinds of interesting, curious and entertaining facts. What's the story behind the giant yellow pudding? Why is the Dr. Oetker world also in Hamburg? And what does the adventure world look like as a Lego kit?

The world of experience in Bielefeld

Since its opening in 2005, Dr. Oetker Welt has become a permanent crowd-puller in Bielefeld. During a visit to Dr. Oetker's company headquarters, guests can experience more than 130 years of company history at first hand. A journey through time from the invention of baking powder Backin in 1891 to the delicious stopover at the ultra-modern pudding miracle, which prepares a delicious vanilla pudding for visitors in just a few seconds.

A yellow wonder - the pudding in the Dr. Oetker world

The famous "Puddingwunder" was brought to life in 2006, one year after the brand exhibition opened. The idea for it had been conceived several years earlier and was finally fleshed out as part of a dissertation. After a few tests, it was finally brought to life and continues to delight visitors to Dr. Oetker Welt to this day. At three dispensing stations, they can have a warm vanilla pudding prepared automatically “at the yellow wonder”. The pudding machine is approx. 3.20 m high and covers an area of 16 m². Passers-by can see the oversized pudding from afar - but many people won't believe that pudding is really being prepared inside until they see it for themselves.

Tours, school class programs, seminars

The majority of visitors take part in a guided tour of the brand exhibition. But that is not everything: in school class programs for different grades, students experiment with baking powder or take part in job application training. The “Tour of the 5 Senses” is an extraordinary experience in which the Dr. Oetker World is explored with all five senses. Both young and old can have fun in the family program and baking fans can take part in one of the many seminars in the Dr. Oetker test kitchen. In addition to the guided tours, free tours are also offered regularly: Participants can discover the Dr. Oetker World on their own.

In addition to the classic programs, special events are also held on a regular basis, which are of great interest in Bielefeld and beyond. For example, the opening gala of the German-language poetry slam championships in 2024 provided eloquent entertainment. Artists have showcased their musical talent at various concerts, most recently, for example, the Bielefeld Music and Art School (MuKu), which is located in the immediate vicinity of Dr. Oetker World. The literary stage "Wortbäckerei" has impressed with readings by various authors. The first Dr. Oetker Christmas market was such a great success that the team at Erlebniswelt is planning to hold it regularly from now on.

The Dr. Oetker world fascinates beyond Bielefeld

The Dr. Oetker World in Miniatur Wunderland

The fascination of the brand and the Dr. Oetker World also radiates beyond the borders of East Westphalia and the Lippe region. As the first building from Bielefeld, the world of experience is now located in the fictitious town of Knuffingen in Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg. The popular museum is the most visited tourist attraction in Hamburg and has more than 1.4 million visitors every year.

Dr. Oetker Welt im Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg

The real Dr. Oetker feeling in Miniatur Wunderland is provided not only by the rotating logo on the roof of the building, but also by the little pudding wonder, which is intended to give the inhabitants of the city delicious moments of pleasure. For better recognizability, only three instead of the actual four floors are shown in the building, otherwise numerous details would have been very small. On the second floor is the test kitchen, where new recipes are being worked on diligently. On the second floor, visitors can admire the historical exhibition and children in particular will be delighted to discover Paula the cow.

Dr. Oetker world in Minecraft

The Dr. Oetker world has now also been built in the very popular computer game Minecraft. In 2020, the Youtuber Pippen FT wanted the entire Earth to be recreated in Minecraft, thus initiating the "Build the Earth" project. There are currently almost 5,000 active building projects to recreate the world on a scale of 1:1. Build the Earth Germany currently has more than 1,000 members. As the first building from Bielefeld, they have now chosen the Dr. Oetker world and constructed it in the game.

It's pretty impressive how true to the original it looks, isn't it?

Dr. Oetker world made of LEGO

But that's not all, because the Dr. Oetker world has already been built out of Lego.

Four students from Bielefeld University submitted the Dr. Oetker world as part of an innovation competition in the “Innovation and Technology Management” seminar. This is what their work looked like: LEGO IDEAS - Dr Oetker World (Bielefeld, Germany) Pudding Lovers
